Doxycycline (Own class)
Wound Infection 200mg First day then 100mg for 6 days
Lyme Disease 100mg Twice a day for 10-14 days
Malaria 100mg Once a day for 7 days
Peridontitis 100-200mg Once a day for 7 days
Urinary infection 100-200mg Once a dayfor 7 days
Notes
Advise to take at regular intervals and to complete the course. Some people can get Candida infections (thrush) during or after treatment. Avoid or leave a 2 hour interval between doxycycline and antacids, aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc salts.
Exclusion criteria
Known hypersensitivity to Doxycycline or other tetracycline antibiotics eg. Tetracycline, demeclocycline, lymecycline, minocycline, oxytetracycline or tigecycline. Patients who suffer from fructose intolerance, glucose galactose malabsorption or sucrose-isomaltase insufficiency. Pregnancy, Breast-feeding, Children under 12 years
Cautions
Antacids, aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc salts reduce the absorption of Doxycycline.
Photosensitivity – may manifest as an exaggerated sunburn response on exposure to direct sunlight or ultraviolet light so advise avoidance of sunbeds and use of protection from direct sun exposure.
Patients with myasthenia gravis may suffer from increased muscle weakness
Exacerbation of systemic lupus erythematosus.
Side effects:
Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea
Hypersensitivity reactions: Rash, exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens – Johnson syndrome, urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis, pericarditis)
Dysphagia and Oesophageal irritation, Hepatotoxicity, Pancreatitis,
Blood disorders, Photosensitivity, Headaches and visual disturbances.
